Paying Homage: Miami Steadfast Sewer Itinerary

The city of Miami has been investing in viable options for sewer repair and replacement of pipelines in a state of disrepair. For years, Miami has been a positive reference for other cities when it comes to learning the best method of keeping water infrastructures operating at a superior level. The city’s efficiency for maintaining the sewer system has not gone unnoticed. Equipped with a comprehensive master plan, Miami’s capital improvement program is in full effect and while hundreds of projects have already been completed, even more are planned for the near future. The projects range from water and sewer line rehabilitation and replacement, enhanced monitoring and data systems integration, to improved energy efficiency. Treatment plant upgrades and expansion are also in the works. Recently, Miami received accolades for its insightful and careful planning for future needs of the city, as it involves water systems and distribution. Additionally, the city is now working on the installation of a large waterline traveling down SW 152 Street, parallel to the Miami Zoo. In addition to this, the construction of a new state-of-the-art advanced metering and fiber-optic emergency response system is debuting. The system is complete with new leak detection technology for over 100 miles of the transmission and distribution system. Within a matter of only months, the new component identified up to 50 leaks, thereby saving over 400 million gallons of water. Because of this advancement, the city was presented with an additional award in water loss management. Flow Equalization and the Everglades Restoration

Flow equalization basins provide a more steady flow of water to storm water treatment areas, helping to maintain desired water levels needed to achieve optimal water quality treatment performance.  The A-1 Flow Equalization Basin (FEB) is part of several ongoing projects in the State of Florida’s $880 million Restoration Strategies plan, all designed to improve water quality in the Everglades. A flow equalization basin is a constructed storage feature used to capture and store peak storm water flows. The A-1 FEB is capable of storing 20 billion gallons of water, enough to fill 45,000 football fields one foot deep.  The A-1 will also contain vegetation to help reduce phosphorus concentrations before moving water to the storm water treatment areas (constructed wetlands) that serve as the water-cleaning workhorses by removing nutrients from the water that flows into the Everglades. Biscayne Bay is part of the restoration effort and a large Florida ecosystem which also relies upon water that flows directly from the Everglades.  Of the many benefits of this project, it will serve to maximize water quality improvement abilities.  Construction is underway on the $59.9 million project, which includes levees, water control structures, collection and conveyance canals and pump station upgrades. South Florida’s Ecosystem and Everglades Task Force

The greater Everglades ecosystem, called the south Florida ecosystem, stretches south from Orlando through the Chain of Lakes, the Kissimmee Valley, Lake Okeechobee, the remaining Everglades, and on to the waters of Florida Bay and the coral reefs. The current ecological mission is to preserve the Everglades landscape and wildlife. The South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force consists of 14 members. There are seven federal, two tribal, and five state and local government representatives. The duties of the Task Force are to:  Coordinate the development of consistent policies, strategies, plans, programs, projects, activities, and priorities addressing the restoration, preservation, and protection of the South Florida ecosystem; Exchange information regarding programs, projects and activities of the agencies and entities represented on the Task Force to promote ecosystem restoration and maintenance; Coordinate scientific and other research associated with the restoration of the South Florida ecosystem;  and to provide assistance and support to agencies and entities represented on the Task Force in their restoration activities. Did you know?? Florida has more than 7,700 named lakes over 20 acres and countless ponds from 1-20 acres.  Many of those smaller ponds are on private property.
